Tropical Storm Force Winds Reach the Coast
As seen from the illustration the 50mph winds (area in orange) are up against the southern coast of the Dominican Republic as of 8am Friday morning with the general path of the storm moving in a westernly direction. Later today the path of the storm is expected to return to it’s west by northwest direction taking it over a portion of Haiti.
It was expected that Tropical Storm Isaac would have gathered considerably more strength by this time. At this point the hurricane warnings and watches have been dropped for the Dominican Republic leaving only tropical storm warnings, although there is still a hurricane watch for Haiti.
Preparation for Isaac
On Thursday schools were closed nationwide in preparation to the upcoming storm, condition red, was called for many of the Providences including interior Providences like Cotui and the international airports were put on alert.
Path of Tropical Storm Isaac
Even with the downgraded predictions for Isaac it is still expected to drop large amounts of water over the Dominican Republic over the course of today (Friday). A strong surge will increase the water level as much as 1-3 feet above normal tide level along the coast today which can be accompanied by dangerous waves and rip currents.After passing over part of the Dominican Republic and Haiti Isaac will continue in a west by northwest direction toward Cuba in a direction toward Florida. As Isaac passes over water it is expected to once again start increasing in strength.
Floods and Mud Slides
Total rainfall is expected to reach 8-12 inches with a possible maximum of 20 inches. Most of this will be falling later today and with it brings the strong possibility of floods and mud slides. Residents in areas frequently affected by floods and mudslides should take precautions to prevent loss of life and property.
8/25/12 Tropical Storm Winds
Overnight Tropical Storm Isaac passed over Haiti after the center of the storm dodged the Dominican Republic. For the Dominican Republic the hardest hit areas were in the southern portions of the DR including Santo Domingo. Tropical Storm force windsAfter passing by the DR Isaac passed directly over a portion of Haiti. As I get reports I will post them to the comments section of this page.
A hurricane watch is still in affect for Haiti although the current sustained winds is at 60mph down from 65 mph. There is also a hurricane watch on the east coast of Florida from Golden Beach southward. The Florida Keys and Andros islands in the Bahamas is also under a hurricane watch.
The West coast of Florida from Bonita Beach southward, Florida Bay, and the Florida Keys including the Dry Tortugas all are under a hurricane warning.
After passing over Haiti, Isaac is in a path over Cuba and in the direction of Florida. After the cyclone remained well organized and lost little strength (drop of 5 mph winds) as it crossed Haiti and given its path where it will have minimal interaction with Cuba, Isaac is expected to gain strength as it continues its west-northwest path.
Over the next 36 hours Isaac is expected to reach hurricane strength. In the next three days it is expected that the west-northwest path of Isaac will change to a northern path as it passes by most of Florida and heads up into the gulf.

Looks like at least Punta Cana will be missing the worst of the storm. Still going to cause a lot of damage though

We are supposed to be flying into the DR on Monday for a week long vacation in Punta Cana. I am trying to figure out what the weather is like right now and if there was any damage. Does anybody have any information about this?

@Angela
The storm has passed and the heat is turned back on. The storm passed pretty far below Punta Cana so any damage caused was slight and quickly repaired. So no worries! Enjoy your vacation!
The weather report for the next 5 days puts most of the days as partially cloudy (not a bad thing when it is hot), with little chance of rain. There is a chance of rain today with tunderstorms, but these usually pass pretty quickly. You can get the daily forcast here http://www.dr-dominicanrepublic.com/dominican-republic-weather-forcast/

Tropical Storm Isaac is now Hurricane Isaac and is preparing to slam into Louisiana. Storm Surge flooding is already occurring as the center of the hurricane closes into about 15 miles of the mouth of the Mississippi River. Maximum sustained winds have reach 80 miles per hour.
As per the COE (Emergency Operations Center) Tropical Storm Isaac left 29,875 people evacuated, 6,693 homes damaged, and 116 towns cut off in its wake nationwide. The vast majority of the damage occurred while the storm was passing through the southwest section of the DR. There are still 9 provinces that are still under flash flood and mudslide alerts. The provinces include Pedernales, Barahona, Azua, San Cristobal, Peravia, Duarte (especially the Lower Yuna river basin), Monte Plata, Santo Domingo and the National District.

We are supposed to be flying into the DR on Sunday 9th september for two weeks in Puerto Plata. Does anybody have any information if the hurricane Isac passed that aera and left any damage?
August 29th, 2012 at 9:03 am
@Tereza
Puerto Plata is on the North side of the island and so was pretty far from the center of the storm. We got heavy rain over most of the island but most of the damage was in the south.
In short, I doubt you will even be able to tell Isaac hit the island from what you will find in Puerto Plato,
No Worries, Have fun!

It shouldn’t come to anyone’s surprise that Isaac was a wet storm. Most of the rainfall on Hispaniola fell on the southeast portion of Haiti and the Southern coast of the Dominican Republic.
Nasa tracked the rainfall with a satellite and put it between 5-8 inches of rain (areas of Florida made it to 13 inches). You can check out a map of the rainfall here
