I’ve now worked with the Jw Library on 2 Kindle Fire HD, two of the new Fire 5th Generation various phones and a IPad. Except for the iPad I’ve had this problem at times with all of them. First it is good to understand that JW Library is a resourceful incentive program. Not many applications are this complex and use so many different forms of data. So you have to expect it to be slow at times. However there are two main times I have found it to slow down or even stop.

On initial startup

Sometimes hangs here on first startup

First screen of JW Library, Sometimes hangs here on first startup

Several things happen the first time you run the application after installing. It’s best to have other applications turned off the first time you use this application. Once that is done it doesn’t compete for resources too bad with other applications. Also, make sure you have a good internet connection the first time you start it up.

The application seems to download additional information the first time it starts up. Phones that access the internet slowly and other devices that are connected to a slow internet can expect to have to wait a minute or two watching a spiraling circle as the program loads. I’ve had this startup talk over 5 minutes the first time. After that the application will load much quicker. You will also need to download your first bible. Choose your language and wait for it to load. Depending on the language, the bible can be 15 to 40 MB. That will need to load before the JW Library application loads the first time.

If you have a mini sd card (additional memory) installed or you plan on adding one, do not start downloading any other literature yet!  Once things are loaded on your kindles on-board memory it is a little more difficult to get those items moved to the sd card. You need to make setting changes in two locations first.

  • Settings of your kindle
  • Settings in JW library

I’ll address these changes in a different post. To sum up this subheading, while there are things you can do to minimize the wait, in particular make sure you are connected to a fast internet, there is little more you can do than wait. I have had one phone though that never started up. I needed to delete the application and start the process again, the second time it worked.

Delays while using the JW Library Application

When you first go into a new category at times your kindle will hang.

Hanging circle of death

Hanging circle of death – Or a good place to work on Gal 5:22 Patience!

This seems to be especially true when there are many items in the category. This leads me to believe that the application is adjusting the database. Once it is finished you can switch to that category pretty quickly. I haven’t had this happen to my iPad so this is probably due to the slower processor of the kindle and some smart phones. This is one of the reasons I am hesitant to use the kindle during talks. You don’t want to wait 30-60 seconds for a page to open during a talk, out in service or a bible study you can normally deal with the delay.

If you get an endless spinning circle you have a different problem. Most of the resources I found on the matter said to delete the application and start over again. THIS SHOULD NOT BE NECESSARY! It is a real pain to reload all your files and I’ve yet to have to reload the application once it has fully installed. Before getting desperate try this first.

In most case this hanging death simply happens because the cashe for JW has filled up. Every time this has happened to me it was becuase I tried loading too many things at a time and the message cashe filled up.

  • Goto your setting section for you kindle (not the settings within JW Library).
  • Click “Apps & Games”
  • Click “Manage All Applications”
  • Find and click on “JW Library”
JW Library settings

JW Library settings

These are your kindle settings for the JW Library Application. If you have an sd card installed you can click on “Move to SD Card” to start using your SD card. You will also need to adjust a setting in JW Library so that the application starts to download all media to your card. If you hit “Clear Data” that will erase all movies, books, music and other media used by JW Library from your tablet. Ne careful with that one or you will need to reload all of these again.

Look for “Clear Cache”.  That one is safe to click. this cache is used to save data speed the program up. It also holds the messages from JW Library to you. I.E. “video failed to load”. If this fills up it can cause the application to stall. When you click this it clears this portion of the memory and you should be able to start up JW library again. While I haven’t needed to try this with other phones and tablets, if the application stalls and won’t open it is worth a try.

After I clear the cache I usually restart the tablet to clear its cache also and then restart the application.

Well, I hope this helps! Enjoy!!
