One of the fastest ways to Learn Dominican Spanish and build your Spanish Vocabulary easily is to get the hang of Cognates. Cognates are words that have the same or a very similar meaning in Spanish as in English and are spelled the same except for one or two small differences.

For this tip we are going to work with “tion” cognates. While this doesn’t work with all English words ending with “tion” it does with the vast majority of them. Simply change the English “tion” with “cion” and put an accent on the “on”. Unlike in English, this ending is broke into 2 syllables “ci” (pronounced like “sea” in English) and “on” (pronounced like “own” in English).

Now for your instant vocabulary boost. Remember, if you can’t figure out the English word, replace the “cion” with “tion” and you will figure it out. Sometimes you may need to make a few minor adjustments to the spelling, in many cases where there are two “s’s” in English (association) there is only one “s” in Spanish (asociación). You will also find this with Ts (attention – atención). Occasionally you will find other spelling differences like with the word “intonation”, with this word Spanish changes the “i” to an “e” (entonación), this change is pretty rare though.

There is no need to memorize this list of Spanish cognates, just go over the list and practice some of the words until you get familiar with the words and can easily recognize them. Once you get the hang of how to do it, you will be able to easily add new words into your Spanish speaking as needed.
